Satire and comedy have long been used as tools to speak to truth to the masses about power and inequality. This semester, we examine the strong social messages behind some of the most hilarious comedians and satirists in history to illuminate the harsh realities hidden behind their jokes. From Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” to George Carlin, Dave Chappelle, Tiffany Haddish and more, we will analyze the social issues being brought to light through their comedy. We will study satire, social inequality, and the power of language to fight back against oppression. Get ready to laugh, to cry, and to critique the world around us.
